My friend Cynthia Briggeman is committed to gifting Strengthand Inspire bracelets for 6 weeks to people touched by breast cancer. “The last 3 weeks have been humbling to say the least. Hearing the intimate stories of women in my community and those around the United States has truly touched me and made me realize these stories need to be shared. Women such as myself, that by the grace of God, have not been touched in my immediate family need to know and share the stories of others. Not to promote fear, but awareness and the importance of early detection, testing and self-breast exam.”
I teamed up with Cynthia of Stella and Dot, and we randomly selected our recipient Karen Smith of Maine. She shared her story with us after we announced her name. She also shared that she would be spending this weekend on her pink scooter. Love everything about her...especially that she is healthy!
Karen shared with us: "My mother and grandmother both passed in their early 60's so I became diligent starting at 30 with mammograms. Upon my 36 birthday (1994) I was diagnosed. Ended up at Sloan Kettering and had a radical mastectomy on my right side with immediate reconstruction. Nine months of chemo and then the reconstruction was completed. My husband and two small boys (3&4) were troopers and continue to do so. After chemo I was put on tamoxifen but one of the side effects caused uterine cancer and had to have a complete hysterectomy (1998). No problem since I had my two children-thankfully. Fast forward to Feb. '07 was diagnosed with MS which I take daily medications for. March '09 new MRI of my left breast showed a possibility of cancer. ..it was and proceeded to have a simple mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. Chemo followed for the next 6 months even loss my hair this time. Reconstruction followed after all my lab work looked good...so I'm perky and bright forever. “
“Present day...cancer free. MS behaving itself. New puppy. Happy husband and young men... Life is good . “
