A young Mark Cuban at work coding and learning hard |
Five take away lessons from "Mark Cuban shares the most important lesson he learned in his 20s" by Richard Feloni (Business Insider).
1. Finish your college. Mark Cuban received his bachelor's degree from Indiana University in 1981
2. Don't be ashamed of taking a menial job. After college, Cuban moved with his friends to Dallas and became a bartender
3. Don't be afraid to do what you want to do even if you get fired for it. Mark Cuban got fired from his job for disobeying his boss' order.
4. Don't be afraid to start a business even if you don't know anything about it. Mark Cuban partnered with an experienced executive to start a software distribution company called MicroSolutions.
4. Learn everything you can. Cuban spent countless hours learning about his software business so that he would outperform the competition. He sold MicroSolutions in 1990 to H&R Block for $6 million where he made about $2 million. His first major achievement in business.
5. Read a lot. The knowledge that you acquire through learning about your product is what will accelerate you past your competitors. Allocate a chunk of your day to reading. Cuban said, "Most people won't put in the time to get a knowledge advantage." In college, you learn to get paid. The pay off is to get paid to learn. The things most people don't like doing are usually the materials on which wealth are made of.
